2nd annual Historic Wallace Idaho Blues Festival, July 12-14, 2003
Best 2012 Blues Festival awarded to Wallace Idaho

Thank you to the members of the Inland Empire Blues Society for voting our first Historic Wallace Blues Festival the Best Blues Event of 2012.

As one observer said, "It was like winning Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year at the same time." We hope to stay worthy of such praise. So for our second Wallace Blues Festival, we did not want to disappoint. Instead of last year's fourteen performers, we will have TWENTY-ONE PERFORMERS downtown on six stages over three days for an outrageous Blues Festival that you will never forget!

Since our historic town of 784 individuals has been dubbed The Center of the Universe (as well as The Silver Capital of the World), it is only fitting that this year we span the globe for entertainment. jump to video playbox Thus we have new performers lining up for your enjoyment from England, The South, Seattle, Boise and The Inland Empire. Plus, of course, we invited back some of the stars from our first Blues Festival. Click on the musical note to jump down to the music video playbox where each artist is featured. As this page continues to be developed, click on new artist added to go to the last artist added to the biographical section. With 21 musical groups performing over three days, you may need a schedule and a visual aid to see how we will pull it off.

He is also the winner of these BRITISH BLUES AWARDS: Male Vocalist of the Year in 2011, and Blues Band of the Year in 2010.

from The South

Nikki Hill Nikki Hill Another blues performer traveling to Wallace from far away is an amazing newcomer possessed by the R&B demon shouters of the past, a woman who will entertain your socks off, Nikki Hill. jump to video playbox "The fast-rising, hard-charging, 20-something, North Carolina born-and-bred singer Nikki Hill has more than earned her evocative 'Southern Fireball' moniker." (LA Weekly)

Now almost thirty, Seth Freeman has played the guitar since the age of four. He was was taught by his grandfather, his dad, and Jim Turner, and later by Paul Travis, one of the leading instructors in Arkansas. Growing up in a musical family, Seth is a third generation guitar player. Family reunions consisted of big circles of musicians playing bluegrass and old gospel hymns. Seth used to teach guitar in his spare time, but now spends most of his time on the road with his band. In addition to guitar, Seth also plays the drums, bass, lap steel, piano, mandolin, weissenborn and dobro. jump to video playbox Also listen to 13 audio tracks on Seth's homepage.

from Seattle

Stacy Jones Band Stacy Jones Band continues to blow fans away with their high-energy, genre bending performances. Amazing vocals, incredible musicianship, outstanding songwriting and powerful, dynamic arrangements. No wonder that they earned the Washington Blues Society's 2009 BEST NEW BAND Award.

jump to video playbox Stacy Jones not only impresses with a vocal richness beyond her years, but is also a top-notch harmonica player as well as playing keyboards and acoustic guitar. It's easy to understand why Stacy was honored as the "Female Vocalist of 2010" by the Washington Blues Society.

The entertaining trio of Rick Bowen (drums), Tom Jones (bass), and Jeff Menteer (guitar) provides the foundation for a strong ensemble sound and the band's obvious joy of making music together is contagious.

from Boise Idaho

John Nemeth Band John Nemeth Band For our headliner, we found an Idaho boy who now has a national reputation and is a phenomenal entertainer: John Nmeth. jump to video playbox He was recently nominated for FIVE BMA awards for 2013:

  • Soul Blues Album
  • Contemporary Blues Album
  • Soul Blues Male Artist
  • B.B. King Entertainer of the Year
  • Instrumentalist-Harmonica.
Two of his music videos are in the playbox below, four more may be found on his Video Wall.

from The Inland Empire

We will also feature most of your favorite Inland Northwest bands as well, including Bakin' Phat and Big Mumbo Blues Band. Bakin' Phat, despite being made up of three veteran Inland NorthWest musicians, won "Best New Band in 2012." jump to video playbox Big Mumbo Blues Band has been placed in the I.E.B.S. Hall of Fame having won "Best Blues Band," among many other awards, so many times that they have to now wait three years before they can again be nominated!

Sarah Brown Band Seeing as how Wallace was voted the "Best Blues Event for 2012," it seemed only right that we should also present the 2012 Inland Empire Blues Society's "Best Female Blues Performer." jump to video playbox Sara Brown loves performing and has a passion for powerhouse vocals. She has an infectious smile, unending energy, a voice that will excite you... and there's no stopping all the talk about her shoes.

Stars from Last Year

Sammy Eubanks Sammy Eubanks was a huge hit last year at our first Blues Festival, so we are excited to again have him play Wallace. Quite possibly the most reputable musicians in the Inland Empire, Sammy Eubanks, Michael Hays and Jake Barr deliver a quality performance every time they take the stage, playing a variety of Blues, Country and Rock n' Roll Classics as well as originals. jump to video playbox When you think of it, artists like BB King, Robert Cray, Little Ed and Blues Imperials, Philip Walker, Kenny Neal and anyone that plays the Blues has been honing their craft their entire lives. At the other end of the spectrum, artists like George Jones, George Strait, Marty Stuart, Merle Haggard, Lee Roy Parnell and anyone who has ever banged it out in a Honky Tonk have been honing their craft as well. Sammy can stand on either stage and has many times. It was recently stated, "Along the borderline between Country and Blues, some genius arises. Delbert McClinton and Sammy Eubanks have the same borderline genre."

The Fat Tones Also a hit at the first Wallace Blues Festival, The Fat Tones will return to entertain our village at the center of everything. The Fat Tones are Hall of Famers with the Inland Empire Blues Society having won multiple awards multiple times. The Fat Tones' Bobby Patterson won Best Blues Guitarist in 2011 as well. jump to video playbox "Bobby ... possesses world-class talent that he does not hold back when playing live shows especially. ... Whether playing purely instrumental jams or showcasing their trademark harmonic melodies and clever lyrics, The Fat Tones bring it every time." (Matt Nagle, Tacoma Weekly) Their performance last year certainly made our crowd happy! Two of their outdoor YouTube videos are presented below, but a 1 hour, 42 minute TV LIVE concert/interview, recorded Feb 20, 2013, is also available in a separate window.

After enhancing our 28th Depot Day celebration on May 11, 2013, Anita Royce Anita Royce and The High Rollers will return for their second Wallace Blues Festival performance. Last July, she entertained Blues fans at the Red Light Garage. The music of the High Rollers may be described as "Rockin' Blues and Jump Swing." jump to video playbox They provide a high energy show with Anita Royce's sultry vocals and guitar leads, Forest Govedare's soulful guitar, with Jimi the Keys and his inspirational wit on the weighted eighty eights. Art Donnelly on bass and Doug McQuain on drums are a groovin' rhythum section. Anita has been called the Queen of the Blues by Sammy Eubanks.

The Kenny James Miller Band At our first Bluesfest, the Kenny James Miller Band rocked the Metals Bar on Cedar from 9 to closing on Friday. Originally hailing from Kalispell, Montana, this dynamic trio has torn it up around the Northwest lately. jump to video playbox They were recently given the Best New Blues Band Award by the Inland Empire Blues Society. They are loved for their great live performances and original music. In 2011, they were a Washington State Blues finalist for the International Blues Challenge in Memphis; they won the Spokane Semi-Final Competition. This band rocks the blues.

Doghouse Boyz Inland Empire Blues Society multiple award winners, the Doghouse Boyz are Neil Elwell on acoustic guitar, dobro, and vocals, and Ramiro Vijarro on fretless bass, and vocals. The Doghouse Boyz continue to make their brand of blues, jazz, folk and rock a welcomed and dynamic sound for fans throughout Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. The Doghouse Boyz present original blues, as well as dynamic renditions of old favorites and obscure tunes from "back in the day." Last year, the Doghouse Boyz entertained folks in the Beer Garden between Main Stage acts. This year, they will perform three times in the Beer Garden. No internet videos, but listen to original blues music on the Doghouse Boyz webpage.

Laffin' Bones At our first blues festival, the three piece boogie blues band Laffin' Bones entertained everyone at the Smoke House Saloon & BBQ on Friday night. This year, they return for another Friday engagement, this time in the Gazebo on Sixth Street facing the the Smoke House. This band was voted Best Blues Band 2011 by the Inland Empire Blues Society for good reason. They always bring the party with foot stompin' rockin' blues and incredible slide guitar from frontman Mr. Neil Elwell. Neil is joined with Ramiro, the other half of the Doghouse Boyz, and drummer Tony Samuel to form a group that makes you move. No recent videos, but click on the album cover to hear selections from "Drive That Road".

Ray Roberson Also a player in the Blues and Brews Patio last year, Ray Roberson will make three appearances Saturday on the Cedar Street stage. Ray and his associates have either been nominated for or won everything that the Inland Empire Blues Society has to offer. For example, they won Best Acoustic Blues Act in 2007 and again in 2012, and Best Slide Guitar in 2012. Last year, Ray brought along Neil Beese ("BZ") on bass to entertain us. This year, Miah Flores on drums will join them. Together as Roberson, BZ and Flores they deliver an original and passionate brand of no-frills blues. No internet videos, but click on the album covers to listen to their music.

Jim Tilden Brown, the Bossman The charm of historic Wallace has always attracted talented musicians. From 2000 to 2002, Cogwells Saloon (now Smoke House Saloon and BBQ) was known for a wide variety of folk and blues music on weekends. Jim Tilden Brown, known as "The BOSSMAN," played there at least twice. jump to video playbox Jim was known for getting the place hoppin' with his wit and "rockin' boogie blues." We welcome him back to town to join the Doghouse Boyz in the Beer Garden, and Roberson, BZ & Flores on the Cedar Street Stage as they bridge the Main Stage intermissions.

click to see more of HooDoo Udu By all accounts, our first annual Wallace Blues Festival on July 13-14, 2012, was a great success for the town, the performers and the approximately 2000 Blues Fans who attended. The most amazing thing is that our little town of 784 individuals pulled this event off in 90 days from concept initiation! A photographic reprise of the performances and a depiction of festival ambiance tell the story of a great day in Wallace's cultural history.
