Historic Wallace Idaho Photo Album

There is so much historic architecture in town and so much gorgeous scenery just outside of Wallace, that a one page photo album cannot do it justice. When you add in moods and moments captured from North Idaho industry and recreation, I'm sure this page will evolve into a layer of photography pages... with your help.

Photos Sought

Whether you are a tourist or local, if you have photos of the area that you would like to share, please send the JPG's with descriptions to me at [email protected]. I will display them in this or an evolved format with your name, email and/or website displayed according to your wishes. If your favorite photo is descriptive of a particular place within an hour's drive of Wallace, it might become part of the Recreation near Wallace page. Naturally, photos taken at festivals could be best used as contributions to the Silver Valley Festivals page or one of its subpages.
Thank you,
Greg Marsh, Ph.D.

These pictures were taken by my friends Tim and Julie who rode the Route of the Hiawatha during the the summer of 2001. Ironically, I spent the summer renting bikes at Lookout Pass, and never made it out on the trail. More photos from their trip and commentary may be found on the Recreation near Wallace page. Opening the trail map in a separate window may help visualize the adventure.
The Taft Tunnel is 1.8 miles long.
The bike trail has less than a 2% grade.
Besides 9 tunnels, 7 trestles characterize the bike trail.
Built for the railroad, the trestles are now geared for mountain bikes.
Naturally, the vistas are a big part of the adventure.

The winter of 1996-97 was amazing! By March 13, there were 201 inches of snow at the top of Silver Mountain's Chair 2 and the season lasted until May 17! These pictures were taken by my snowboarding and graphic artist friend Anthony as we explored the deep powder accessible only by hiking 500 feet straight up to the summit of Wardner Peak (note the radio towers in the first frame). We're in Silver Mountain's unique Double Black Diamond "Hike and Ski" area. It is not patrolled, so some of us call it the "Do it Right or Die" area. Don't worry, there are 1500 acres of regular skiing terrain for the less adventurous. With over 50 runs, no lift lines, and gondola access from I-90, this place should be world famous. Instead it is being kept a secret by its Oregon-based management.

By the way, I paid $199 for my 1998/99 pass... how much does your local ski area charge? To see what I got for my money, check out my '98 skiers diary.

Photos taken by Greg while alpine skiing at Silver Mountain and at Lookout Pass, and while cross-country skiing to the top of Beacon Mountain, may be found on the Recreation near Wallace page.
