2003/2004 Ski Area Snowfall Log

for the Silver Valley

I moved to Wallace in January 1993 because it was a charming village halfway between TWO ski areas, a dozen miles in either direction on Interstate 90 in northern Idaho's Silver Valley. This page will log the snowfall statistics for both Silver Mountain, a gondola ride away from Kellogg, and Lookout Pass, at the Montana border. Click on the animated color bars to move between the top and bottom of the data.

Mostly cloudy with scattered snow showers. Fog level rose during the day. Highs in the mid 30's. Great job of grooming, NO hazards. Foot of new powder in trees was tricky, but fun... for me... however companion fell too many times and was exhausted, so we left after 12 runs.

The new terrain is SWEET! All 5 new runs are about a mile in length with the same "upside down bowl" topography: mellow proceeding gradually to steep with an easy, wide and fast runout to the new lift. How "steep" determines whether they're called intermediate or expert. The run under the chair becomes "extremely steep," while the outside run, 1.2 miles long, goes through a "fairly steep" phase. Made 18 runs (no falls) between 9:30 and 3:00 -- pleasant muscle pain on soft groomed snow with knee deep powder in the trees for a real workout.

Cloudy with light snow, yet great views of St. Regis Basin. Well groomed runs made for fast skiing, except in trees where snow was deep and tricky. Made 18 runs (2 mellow falls), mostly on the new terrain. Parking lot was full, yet 2 runs were made WITHOUT SEEING ANYONE between start and finish of wide, mile long runs! For $12 (because I'm over 40 and it was Friday), this has to be the best ski deal in America.

'Colorado Blue' sky, a weather inversion (warmest at ski area summit) and the breathtaking view of St.Regis Lakes Basin made it easy to linger at the top of the new south-facing terrain. Still made 19 runs (no falls), however. The five well-groomed new runs are perfect cardiac workouts: start slow, get a rhythm going, and maintain it as the pitch gradually increases to the point of exhaustion. Skiing at top speed, it takes me more than 3 minutes to drop 1050 feet on a mile long intermediate run.

Cloudy all day, but no snow; spring conditions due to yesterday's warmth and light rain. Top of groomed runs were smooth sailing, but they became more icy as elevation decreased. (note for New England skiers: "icy" does not mean there was actual ice as you know it; it means my skis made a lot of noise.) Grooming could have been better. Snow in trees too heavy to be fun. Made 19 runs (1 fall) between 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM.

Dramatic weather day: bright sun and blue sky surrounded by black clouds leading to a half hour blizzard that dropped an inch of snow, followed by gentle snowfalls inside other clouds passing through between sun breaks. Good spring skiing on soft, well groomed slopes on both sides of Runt Mountain; snow under trees a little too crusty for my liking. Never a lift line. Made 20 runs (no falls) before 3:00 PM!

Blue sky with fluffy white clouds changed to dark clouds with sun breaks during the day, but no snowfall. Made 20 runs with no falls on soft spring snow. A few new marked obstacles, but no rocks or bare spots. The trees were OK at mid-day. Several runs were made where the first two and only people I saw after leaving the top of the mountain were the lift operators a mile later! Spectacular views, solitude and soft snow go well together.

Snowed all day, heavy at times in the morning, with magnificent sun breaks in the afternoon. Felt like I was skiing in New England during the morning: fluff on ice, where your skis play slip n' grip and your thigh muscles never relax. However, as the day got warmer and the new snow got deeper, the conditions improved dramatically, along with my ability to ski gracefully. Made 16 runs with one sit-down fall.

Perfect Lookout Pass Spring Snow: VERY FAST yet quite pushable, so no fear, ~45, bright sun, only 100 people spread over 22 runs, nothing could be finer. While there were obvious bare spots on the steepest south facing slopes, the traditional ski area was unblemished. Made 20 runs (no falls) begining at 10 AM.

Brought my "rock skis," yet only hit one small stone during 23 runs made from 10 to 4 PM on a sunny day that reached the mid-60's. The excellent job done grooming during the season was evident by the fact that 45 trails (80%) were still open in spite of the much lower than normal April snow depth. In fact, 23 trails were freshly groomed, including several expert trails packed with delicious corn snow. Yes, there were lots of obvious bare spots... just not on the open trails. Great job guys!
