2004/2005 Ski Area Snowfall Log

for the Silver Valley

I moved to Wallace in January 1993 because it was a charming village halfway between TWO ski areas, a dozen miles in either direction on Interstate 90 in northern Idaho's Silver Valley. This page will log the snowfall statistics for both Silver Mountain, a gondola ride away from Kellogg, and Lookout Pass, at the Montana border. Click on the animated color bars to move between the top and bottom of the data.

39 inches of snow fell since Sunday, making for delightful conditions on a partly sunny and warm day. Fresh-packed powder runs were fast and easy; fresh-on-packed power runs were boot deep and heavenly, while the unpacked powder was deep, moist and humorous. Made 8 runs by 11 AM: never fell, but came to an unexpected full stop twice when snow depth overcame gravity and common sense.

This was obviously not a day for skiing or snowboarding... but when you live in a mountain recreation paradise, there is always something to do. As I walked along the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River from my home in Silverton to my office in Wallace today, I first noticed the exceptionally high water... and then two guys in kayaks playing in standing waves normally seen only in the spring.

Fun powder/crud was found on Hoot Owl. Top of mountain was always sunny; bottom was always foggy.

The unusually low snowfall so far this season has been well conserved by Silver's superior snow management team, who have kept a score of runs off of Chairs 1 & 2 in good condition, with half of those recently groomed. I made 5 runs in light freezing fog without falling or hitting a rock, and retired to the hospitality of the Mountain Haus, which has been redesigned to accommodate an on-mountain rental shop.

The machine groomed packed powder was very carvable on this overcast warm day. We made 7 fast runs around noon, then went in to check out the DINING AREA in the NEW LODGE, which opened today. The upstairs bar will open in 4-6 weeks. The almost completed two-story building is a very nice and necessary extension to the original Lodge built in 1941.

Four hurricanes in Florida this fall, record cold and snowfall currently in the Midwest, and we get a mild winter! How weird is this? An historical perspective on Silver Valley Christmas snowfall may provide an answer.

Jackass Ski Area Anniversary:
all tickets were $9.95
As the ski report said: Excellent conditions and coverage on front side of mountain. Early season conditions on backside. We made 4 runs on each by 11:30 under light snowfall. Rainbow Ridge on the backside was SWEEEET!! Several inches of fresh powder on groomed surface with some drifting. Top of Cloud 9 was untracked powder heaven, but the bottom was "bump-the-stump" in places because the upper parts of the other three backside runs had funneled traffic to it on Monday and Thursday when the bottom steeps of those runs were closed. They are still closed... good thing. Traffic was not really a problem, however. During our FOUR mile-long runs down the backside, Jim and I only encountered ONE OTHER PERSON! The two friendly lift operators were the only people we ever saw at the bottom.

We drove into the parking lot at noon, and drove out at 2:05, after making 6 runs on everything from smooth packed powder on Rainbow Ridge (backside) to knee-deep dry powder in the Lucky Friday Glades (frontside). The backside was way more crowded than last Friday... there were TWO people talking to the lift operators when we arrived in lift line from Rainbow Ridge (but they let us go ahead), and during our fast boot-deep powder run on flawless mile-long Cloud 9, I think I saw two or three other people... very briefly. Overcast sky with sun breaks made shadows appear like magic in the increasingly cold air. Cold snap predicted for tonight.

Click to see other photos taken today Cold snap? Yeah, right. Yes, the snow was squeaky and my digital camera quit after taking 4 awesome photos, but skiing on a sunny day with no wind and afternoon temperatures in the mid-teens, is not that bad! We made 7 runs on perfect snow between 12:50 and 3:15 and quit because we were exhausted, not because we were cold.

Made first tracks down freshly packed powder on Cloud 9. Perfect corduroy with untouched powder found at the sides of this and other backside runs. Lots of powder still under the trees in the Lucky Friday Glades, but it is getting heavier as the cold snap rebounds with a vengeance. In fact, the overcast sky soon produced snow, which turned into "snain." We left after 7 runs; finding a dozen people ahead of us in a backside lift line made the decision easy. Back in Wallace by 11 AM.

Click to see other photos taken today Seven afternoon runs were made under perfect spring conditions... in the middle of February. This is the "worst winter" on record, and yet it is hard to complain about deep blue sky and temperatures approaching 40°F. Only the front side was open, but, as the photos show, we had the place to ourselves. Even the Lucky Friday Glades were fun... but not for the faint of heart. The fluffy residual powder was mixed with little trees and bushes, making vigilance the word for the day.

As the snow report said: Best conditions of the last month. 19" of new snow in the last 72 hours with more snow in the forecast! Our first four runs were made entirely on untracked dry powder. Jim got several "face shots" in the deepest powder pockets; moving slower, I was very happy to be making smooth turns in the consistently over-the-boot fluff. Even the north facing trees were skiable. We made 11 runs under an overcast sky, returning exhausted to Wallace by noon.

With another 5 inches to play on, the early morning powder runs were heavenly. It was easy to make short radius turns, one right after another. More people were on the slopes than yesterday, but there was never a lift line. This in spite of the fact that THE ONLY TWO SKI AREAS STILL OPERATING IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST ARE IN THE SILVER VALLEY! As the day warmed into the forties, however, the snow became heavier and my muscles became weaker. My limit was reached at 12 runs.

FOUR FEET of new snow fell at the summit during the last week, making for excellent spring skiing. The back side was open for the first time since Sunday, February 27! Made 6 runs in 2 hours beginning at 8:30AM; 4 were on the south facing back side. The deep stuff was like mashed potatoes, while the groomed snow was quite quick, especially towards the bottom where a few obstacles made things challenging. The north facing front side had the more consistent snow.
